The Body Shop Cruelty Free & Vegan Brushes Review // MissBeautyEmily

The Body Shop Cruelty Free & Vegan Brushes
The Body Shop has always been my go-to shop for skin care but it's never crossed my mind for makeup brushes. The Body Shop have introduced a brush range that is 100% cruelty free and vegan which makes it ideal for all of us. The brush hairs are made from specialist synthetic hairs with a charcoal covering whilst their handles are made from sustainably sourced wood! What more could you ask for? They have a variety of styles ranging from eye brushes, powder brushes, fan brushes and more so you'll be completely kitted out.

(L-R: Slanted Blusher Brush, Buffing Brush, Contouring Brush, Smudger Brush, Eyeshadow Crease Brush)

Slanted Blusher Brush
I tested this brush using a blusher from my Benefit Cheek Parade palette and it picked up the product really well. I didn't feel the product transferred onto my cheeks as well as usual since the colour seemed quite sheer whereas previously when I've used the same blusher, it's gone on a lot more opaque. However, I was able to build up the colour with this brush to gain the look I usually go for. Personally for me, this brush would be better for bronzer since I prefer a more natural looking colour when it comes to the bronzed look and I feel this brush would do well for that.

Buffing Brush
A buffing brush is perfect for foundation and personally they are my favourite for foundation application. This particular brush is a little smaller than I'm used to but was quite easy to adapt to and helped to get into all those little crevices on your face! At first I wasn't too sure on the finish it gave, it became patchy on my nose and I had to remove it as it was too noticeable for my liking but kept the remaining foundation on my face on. Thankfully, I ended up loving my foundation look at the end of the day, it looked even and provided full coverage which is obviously what any girl would want. I just have a bit of a weird nose when it comes to foundation and can never put much on without it going very patchy so I'll just have to steer clear from using this brush on my nose in future!

Contouring Brush
I always feel like this design of a contouring brush is well designed since it basically provides you with your contour line without having to do much. However, since I'm so pale this brush applied the product quite densely and wasn't great for blending it out. If you're into your sharp contour then I think this brush will be perfect but because I'm so ghostly pale, I can't get away with it!

Flat Shader/Smudger Brush
This is definitely one of my favourite brushes from the set I received! I use the smudger brush to pack colour onto my lid and it really does help increase the pigment and intensity of the colour I'm using. It's quite a small and dense brush which I didn't feel would work for me but I honestly love it! With it being small, it means I can apply colour onto the lid precisely without accidentally getting any into the crease colour. I also use the brush to apply shadow under my water line for definition and it fits so well underneath! This has definitely become my go-to brush for eyeshadow!

Eyeshadow Crease Brush
Another of my favourites, yet at the start I did not hold much hope for it. I've had brushes in this style before in the past and they've been too hard to apply or blend eyeshadows and quite frankly felt very uncomfortable on the skin of my eye. However, The Body Shop have designed a silky soft crease brush that applies eyeshadows very pigmented! I usually have to build up my crease colour quite a few times before getting a nice coverage but this brush seems to pack the colour on immediately which I love and it still manages to blend it all out effortlessly. I'd 100% recommend this brush if you're looking specifically for a crease brush and you could use this for apply highlight to the inner corners too!

Overall verdict
I'm very glad to have gotten the chance to try out The Body Shop's brush range as I've never delved into their beauty side and had no idea about their quality or how they'd deliver but I was very impressed! I preferred the eye brushes over the face brushes due to how well they applied the product and made the shadows I used pigmented but I still definitely recommend trying out the face brushes too. The prices of these brushes are reasonable too, they are what you'd usually pay for a decent brush from the drugstore but these happen to be vegan, cruelty free and sourced sustainably too which is a big bonus!

  2. The contour brush looks like it would come in useful for baking/cleaning up my contour with translucent powder! I might have to try it out. The eye brushes seem like the best success, I'll add them to my list when I come off my makeup no-buy 🙈 Fab post!

  3. Hmm looks like a hit or miss situation - I tried one brush from The Body Shop, not from this range and unfortunately cannot remember which one it was but it was for the face and I really did not like it. It barely picked up any product! This was a few years ago and I haven't tried anymore since then. Thank you for the review :)

  4. I love the aesthetic of these brushes, the design is super minimalist and classy! They'd be a great addition to any makeup drawer! I definitely agree that the cruelty free and vegan element to them is super important, animals shouldn't have to suffer for the purposes of producing makeup!
